Balance Lamp: such components together requires a high level of accuracy

With a formation that is stable despite looking very fragile, the Balance Lamp has a thought-provoking design

Victor Castanera has designed an LED lamp – Balance Lamp – that is made of glowing glass orbs that balance between steel shelves. The Spanish designer created this extraordinary lamp for a young Swedish brand called Oblure, which specializes in creating lighting products in collaboration with many world-renowned designers.

The different spherical components of this balancing lamp are sized in order to achieve a perfect balance when working together.

A delicate balance

Balancing such components together requires a high level of accuracy. To help the lamp’s structure become more, the balancing formation is placed on a black marble base.

There are two types of spheres that go into this delicate formation: metal spheres and hand-blown glass orbs, both of which are placed between the steel shelves.

LED lights that are located in the delicate glass orbs makes them shine with a white color that is strongly contrasting with the black color of the metal spheres, shelves and marble base of the lamp.

To balance this whole thing together, the black metal spheres are added to act as a counterweight to the glass orbs. The spheres have to be of the right density in order to achieve the delicate effect.

If any of those spheres are not of the exactly required density, the whole formation would just fall apart. All the wires and connectors of the Balance Lamp are hidden inside its structure, which adds to the overall wow-effect of the design.

Balance Lamp: a reminder of the extraordinary

With a formation that is stable despite looking very fragile, the Balance Lamp conceived by Castanera for Oblure has a thought-provoking design.

From the beginning, Balance was a true challenge,” said Castanera. “We had to work with custom-made LED boards to be able to evenly illuminate the orb and at the same time connect the second orb at the top of the lamp.” says the designer. “I want Balance Lamp to be a reminder of how extraordinary many everyday experiences are. With Balance, I want to evoke the beholder’s curiosity of the world around them.” he adds.
